Mudpie : Primal - Girls & Boys - AW11-12

2011/04/04

Mpdclick presents three trends for autumn/winter 2011/12 that each split into three directions. We begin each trend with Phase 1 for the most commercial representation of the trend, going into store late summer through to early autumn following with Phase 2 for more directional interpretations hitting stores in high autumn through to early winter. We conclude with Phase 3 for the most trend led pieces that filter into stores throughout high winter.

phase 1: equinox

For younger collections Equinox is interpreted by optimistic and energetic prints in a vivid palette. Childlike radial motifs and hand-drawn autumnal and nature-inspired scenes dance happily across oversized jersey basics and all-in-ones. Chunky geometric shapes and busy, vibrant kaleidoscope effects form lively all-over prints.

A Celtic influence inspires patterns and motifs as well as knits, twists and braids that adorn garments. Additionally, pagan aesthetics evoke cloak-like shapes with bell sleeves and dark undertones. For girls, longer length straight skirts and dresses are key, while loosely fitting tapered trousers and jeans with unusual twisted seams compliment the aged nature of the trend.

As a late summer/ early autumn trend, layered styling and differing lengths play with the silhouette of Equinox; androgynous, mysterious drapes and oversized hooded shapes adding to the look. Celebrating nature, finishes and textures mimic our natural surroundings – decorative imperfections remind us of fallen leaves while rope-like knotted leather, used for accessories, contributes to the worn, rural theme.

phase 2: instinct

Animal furs and skins continue the mismatched, unfinished visual of Instinct. Faux furs provide warmth and texture, often featuring in more colourful shades for younger ages. Chunky oversized knits with dramatic bell sleeves and capacious hoods are a style staple for girls. Chunky horn toggle buttons, oversized fastenings and leather trims add interest to shapes. Overtly layered looks are key, with differing fabrics, proportions and lengths in tonal earthen hues.

An aesthetic reminiscent of ancient ancestry and primitive cultures sees earthen hues, animalistic graphics and prints inspired by nature. Graphics are inspired by working the land and an appreciation for our natural environments. For older designs, wild animals are given a life-like but mysterious appearance. Themes of discovery provide a commercial graphic idea; leaves, fossils and feathers are sketched or photo-clear.

Prints are textured, using distressed, roughened techniques. Geology inspires abstract prints, for girls, in warming amethyst and ash grey.

phase 3: survival

Survival marks the need for a new existence following recent economic, political and environmental upheaval. The trend sees military and utilitarian details combine with ideas of salvage, customisation and above all, function.

Girl’s graphics and prints appear masculine, industrial and urban, with bold painterly techniques in dramatic colour ways alongside blocky typography. The use of mechanical parts as graphic elements reinforces a post-apocalyptic warrior style.

Echoing the reoccurring aesthetics of Primal, Survival favours a heavily layered, mis-matched look. For younger ranges, the nomadic warrior look is interpreted by epaulettes on jackets, the use of canvas and utility features. Identity numbers feature on jackets, badges and are bleached out on denim. Boxy bomber jackets and loose combat trousers are key for both boys and girls. Hardware embellishments, straps and motorcycling inspired padding continue a look of contemporary armour.
